Raw Denim vs. Washed Denim: Sourcing the Right Selvedge Denim Fabric for Your Brand
When you source selvedge denim fabric, the two most common terms you’ll hear are “Raw Denim” and “Washed Denim.” For buyers, the practical difference is not only about color or hand feel—it’s also about shrinkage, consistency, and how the fabric is finished.
At WingFly Textile, our core strength is red edge selvedge denim (narrow-width, self-edge). Below is how we position our range, so you can choose the right material for your brand.
1) Red Edge Selvedge Denim (Narrow Width, Self-Edge): Usually “Pre-Shrunk Raw Denim”
Our red edge / selvedge denim fabric is typically supplied as raw denim that has been through complete finishing—including pre-shrinking (sanforized/ pre-shrunk).
That means: it is raw/unwashed in appearance, but dimensionally more stable than unsanforized loom-state cloth.
-
Edge: red line selvedge / custom selvedge ID (blue, white, black, etc.)
-
Width: narrow width (commonly ~31–32″)
-
Finish: usually pre-shrunk (sanforized) as standard; unsanforized available by request
-
Singeing: standard finishes are normally singed; unsinged (not burnt-hair) available by request
-
Supply:
-
Stock / Inventory: MOQ 300 yards
-
Custom development: MOQ 1000–5000 yards (weight, weave, ID color, composition, finish)

2) Washed Denim / Non-Selvedge (Wide Width, Cut Edge): For Shirts, Jackets, Lightweight Styles
We also supply washed denim material mainly for shirting, lightweight jackets, and casual styles. These are typically wide-width, non-selvedge fabrics.
Examples:
-
-
-
Edge: cut edge (no selvedge ID)
-
Width: wide width (commonly ~58–60″)
-
Finish: washed / sanforized
-
MOQ: often from 300 yards (stock-dependent)

4) Which Should Your Brand Choose?
-
Choose red edge selvedge (pre-shrunk raw) if you want: authentic selvedge ID, narrow width, “raw” look, but more predictable sizing/shrinkage.
-
Ask for unsanforized + unsinged if your brand targets: heritage “loom state” handling, maximum texture, and you will manage shrinkage at garment stage.
-
Choose washed wide-width if your application is: shirts, lightweight jackets, or you need comfort from first wear.
